Prof. Arno Hoes (Utrecht, The Netherlands) discusses new biomarkers for predicting of future cardiovascular disease being developed in recent years .

The role of biomarkers in the prediction of future cardiovascular disease is much discussed, Prof. Arno Hoes (Utrecht, The Netherlands) tells about new biomarkers being developed in recent years.
Next to the classical predictors (e.g. blood pressure, age, gender, and lipids) many new plasma markers could be used in primary care:
  • Some easily, like BNP and D-dimer;
  • For others, like CRP and intima media thickness, there is still not enough evidence. In the view of Hoes, “many biomarkers are advocated too early”.
In the future, he expects that some biomarkers will be used in some subgroups.
